This hearty Split Pea and Ham Soup is the ultimate comfort food, packed with rich, smoky flavor and tender peas. It’s perfect for cozy dinners or as a satisfying meal on chilly days.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried split peas, rinsed
  • 1 cup diced cooked ham
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Preparation Steps

  1. Prep the ingredients: Rinse split peas and dice the vegetables and ham.
  2. Cook the base: In a large pot, sauté onions, carrots, and celery over medium heat until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
  3. Combine ingredients: Add split peas, ham, broth, bay leaf, and thyme to the pot. Stir well.
  4. Simmer the soup: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1-1.5 hours, stirring occasionally, until the peas are tender and the soup has thickened.
  5. Season and serve: Remove the bay leaf, season with salt and pepper, and serve warm with crusty bread.
